The Peyton Walker Foundation is one of the country's prominent heart screening advocates and leaders in providing CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillators) training and equipment donations. We aim to educate parents and students about the prevalence of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and the importance of Electrocardiogram (EKG) testing of youth.
"We are thrilled to hear the news of the passage of Senate Bill 375," District III Executive Director Ron Kennedy said. "Real progress continues to be made in the effort to place an AED in every school across District III."
The key provisions Pennsylvania Senate Bill 375 include:
- Mandatory AEDs:
- Emergency Action Plans:
- Staff Training:
- Applies to all school entities, public and private
Recently, during a meeting attended by representatives from approximately 126 schools within District III, an informal survey showed that every school now has at least one AED on campus. Even more encouraging is news came when asked how many schools received an AED through the partnership between the Peyton Walker Foundation and District III, more than 75% raised their hands.
"That is meaningful progress," said Kennedy. "If we had asked that same question just 2–3 years ago, the response would have looked very different.
"The partnership between the Peyton Walker Foundation and District III has played a major role in helping make this possible. Through education, advocacy, fundraising support, and direct collaboration with schools and athletic programs, the partnership has helped remove many of the barriers that once prevented schools from obtaining AEDs. Together, we have worked to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest, emphasize the importance of emergency preparedness, and encourage schools to prioritize access to life-saving equipment."
Beyond simply placing AEDs in schools, the partnership has also helped promote CPR training, emergency action planning, and ongoing conversations about student-athlete safety throughout Pennsylvania.
The progress through the Peyton Walker Foundation is proof of what can happen when organizations, schools, and communities work together toward a common goal.
"What began as a shared commitment to protecting students and communities has grown into a movement that is making a measurable impact across District III," Kennedy added.
"As a parent of two former high school student-athletes, one of which had a very minor heart concern, the relationship with the Peyton Walker Foundation is one of our crowning achievements," District III Director of Communications Steve Navaroli said. "It truly is all about our student-athletes and is so much more important than who wins or loses."
